Enjoyable Sunday brunch
Spur of the moment choice for brunch last Sunday. We had been to 8407 before for lunch and dinner and knew the food would be reliably good, the service efficient and friendly, and the atmosphere pleasant. I had the shrimp and grits, and except for a mix-up with my order that delayed its arrival, it was a great choice--delicious. DH had at the deviled eggs and a grilled cheese, bacon and tomato sandwich. He was happy with his sandwich and had room for key lime pie for dessert. To make up for the delay with my entre, they comped a cappuccino which was appreciated.
fun, lively place
Great service and nice feel - cool space with exposed ceiling. Food was ok, not great. Stay with staples like nachos, burgers and shy away from fancy stuff. Nice diverse menu.
Not what it used to be
I used to be a really big fan of 8407 and my husband and I came here for many special occasions. The new menu shows that they are clearly trying to "down scale" in order to attract new clients. The food seemed heavier (loaded with cheese) and saltier than previously and the menu was less for foodies and more for "mainstream" eaters. And a kids menu??? The restaurant just isn't what it used to be. The biggest disappointment was that even though it seems they are trying to downscale, it didn't seem as though the prices went down with the quality. If that were the case, then I would recommend it as a nice family choice. But, for future special occasions with my husband, I think we will be looking for different dining experience.
The steak Diane was fantastic and the ambiance was rustic and beautiful! One of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time!
Great Business Dinner Locale
This was my 4th or 5th business dinner/mtg held at the Kithen Bar!! It is my "go-to" choice in Southern Maryland.
Good Eats in Silver Spring
8407 is a good place for nice food and drink in downtown Silver Spring. On weekdays the downstairs bar is fine for a lively happy hour scene. If you're in the mood for a more quiet experience, perhaps talking with your date, the upstairs bar provides a welcome contrast. There is a good, imaginative drink list. The food is well prepared and presented. There is ample parking in the area and it is right across from the Metro stop.
Missing On Some Details
Given the appetizing menu and the cost of their entrees , 8407 is missing some of the little details needed to make for an outstanding dining experience. They could have offered a roll/butter plate (or olives or whatever) before the meal, the entree dinner plates were somewhat lacking in terms of presentation for the prices charged and the waiter didn't make an effort to entice us with appetizers or any dish for that matter. The food was tasty and the atmosphere nice, but not enough to keep foodies/gourmets coming back for more.

The restaurant has nice lighting and very spacious. I love fries cooked in duck fat! So crispy! My only gripe is the bathrooms are small and located downstairs. If you're seated at the top in the dining area, you have to walk down the stairs to use it. For a person with knee problems thus was perilous.
Haven't been here in a year, but it seems the food is not as good as I remember. We had the fried oyster appetizer (undercooked and mushy), Duck Duo (confit was dry) and ribeye steak (underseasoned and surprisingly tough). Even the mashed potatoes and vegetables were bland. Maybe they forgot salt? This was once my favorite restaurant. I guess some things have to change, but too bad it's not for the better.
Been patronizing 8407 Kitchen Bar for years. It started out really hot and trendy, and I think that they went into a slump a year or so ago. The good news is that the restaurant has emerged better than ever. While some faves have been retained (Duck two ways is to die for!), the new, expanded menu is "inspired", not "tired". They still emphasize locally sourced, in season foods, the wine selection is outstanding, service is very attentive and the bar downstairs was hoppin' after 9 pm.

My spouse and I visited Kitchen Bar for our recent date night and truly enjoyed the ambiance. The drinks were quite potent and inventive. The deviled eggs were well-seasoned. I had the short rib bolognese-hearty and flavorful. My spouse tried the grilled cheese with bacon and tomato-decided it needed more cheese for the amount of bread provided.
We can count on 8407 to deliver creative, well prepared meals. We are regulars here for that reason.
Great atmosphere but food overpriced and overrated
I've dined at 8407 a few times, and each time the food is always bland and unexciting. For the cost of the entrees, I would stick to the bar menu or burgers/sandwiches. Thinking I couldn't go wrong with a burger, it arrived soggy and not cooked to how I ordered it - I asked for medium rare, but the burger came so rare that I couldn't even taste it. However, the location is convenient (you can park in the metro parking lot for free after 7pm on weeknights), and the atmosphere is great for meeting with friends. Probably a better place for getting drinks or meeting friends for happy hour. They do have a great happy hour menu (everyday too!)
A big change in the kitchen
This was our 5th time to 8407--in the past, the very high-end menu meant we only came for special occasions. We were surprised to see the menu was now tripled in its offerings, with many lower priced items on the menu. You can still get an haute cuisine $30 entree--the duck and the scallop entrees are memorable!-- but I found the $11 mahi tacos were just what I needed. Great cocktails, great coffee. No room for desert. We'll come more frequently now.
Went here on a Friday night for dinner and the bar was really busy downstairs but upstairs was nice and quiet for a perfect dinner. Our waiter was fantastic and the food was delicious. Would go there again on a date or with friends.
Second Time's a Charm
Not impressed back in August. However, this time 8407 was like an entirely different restaurant: both the service and food were very good to excellent. I wasn't pleased with the section of the restaurant in which we were seated. It reminded me of a hospital cafeteria - cold and clinical. Otherwise a most enjoyable dining experience.

Very nice brunch and was left alone to enjoy our conversation.
A bit disappointed this time
This is our third visit. Last time was exceptional. This time we were disappointed both in the service which was surprisingly chaotic for a quiet evening, far from full, and the food itself which was rather ordinary, especially for the price. Drinks too. I'm all for smaller portion beverages but the size needs to be reflected in the price. Half a martini should cost half what a full one does. And shouldn't be more ice shavings than alcohol! We rarely find ourselves needing somewhere to eat in Silver Spring but next time will probably try somewhere new.
I've had brunch at 8407 a couple of times before, but this was the first I'd gone there for dinner. Their brunch is wonderful so I took a chance and booked it for family who was in town for the weekend. It was fabulous!!! 8407 provides a DC feel right in Silver Spring. We had 7 different entrees and each one was delicious.... as were the appetizers and desserts. Our waiter was amazing, he really added to the fun feel at our table. I will definitely go here again and again!! This restaurant is a real find.
Business Lunch Gem
It was my first time picking a team lunch spot for my group at work and being the most junior member, it was nerve racking. 8407 Kitchen did not disappoint! Everyone loved their meals and we all shared the nachos which were awesome. Turns out our CEO also loves this place since we saw him having a business lunch only a few tables away. If you work in Downtown Silver Spring it is a must for lunch!
Al Fresco setting in Georgetown
Great surroundings and service. Good food but not exceptional.
Prepare To Be Pampered
My Bride and I enjoyed our 22nd wedding anniversary there. We were seated right away, at a table of choice, and were mesmerized by the menu selections. The hostess, wait staff, and bartender catered to our ever need. A great time was had by all. Every visit is a special occasion. Looking forward to returning.

Cool place but food could be better
This place has great decor and ambiance, and the 80s soundtrack they'd played was awesome. We ordered the cheese platter for dessert which was great. I ordered the gnocchi, though, and the cheese "sauce" was like plastic or rubber cheese. My gnocchi left dent marks in it when I took it out with my fork. My meal was also very under seasoned. Overall, a slightly disappointing experience. I'd go back, but I wouldn't order the gnocchi.
Took my mom out for her birthday with my sister and boyfriend. We arrived staggered and although we were greeted at first the waiter didn't come back again until we had all been seated for 15 minutes (30 minutes after 2 of us had first arrived). Drinks took another 15 minutes and our food order didn't get taken until that point, almost an hour since we first sat. The food was delicious as were the drinks. All in all from when I sat to when I got to check it was 3 hours, much longer than I wanted or needed to be there. Our waiter barely checked in with us, we saw him standing by the bar doing nothing a lot. I was pretty seething mad but I'm not one to complain to managers or anything (bc I am one and it's super annoying) but service was definitely lacking, seemed like our waiter was maybe new or was overwhelmed in his section, so I didn't want to bite his head off. It was just a weird disparity between the quality of the food, the prices, the atmosphere and then service.
A great Place
I just discovered this place on the web and I enjoyed it a lot. I recommend it for any occasion.
This is the second time I have dined at this restaurant and as usual everything was very good. The chicken liver pate was delicious as an appetizer. I had the duck as an entree and my companion had the lamb chops ( a house specialty). The duck breast was excellent, the thigh and leg just a touch dry. The lamb chops were exquisite! A great place for a great dinner! Service was excellent both in the bar and the dining room!
Awesome Food, Mediocre Service
This dinner was bit more special & important than usual since I was treating a friend who left Washington over 7 years ago and was in town for the first time since she moved back then. When we requested a booth instead of table, the host failed to tell us that we would be waited by the bartender, who was also making drinks for the entire upper level... That made us wait much longer than necessary whenever we needed his help and we were forced to wait a good extra 30 minutes. I wasn't too thrilled about this knowing that the check would end up being over $100 for the two of us. Given that I like to drive my car and this place isn't exactly the most car-friendly restaurant, I probably won't be returning here again for dinner anytime soon. I still recommend this to downtown Silver Spring residents and/or metro rail users that can either walk or metro afterward.
I have been many times. The food and service were notably lower quality this time. My fish was oversalted and the waiter did Not ask how the meal was.
3rd Time and Still Happy!
Went here for a couple's dinner. Made reservations with no problem. The food and wine selection is amazing!!! And the staff is very knowledgeable about pairing and their wine selection! Will def be back!
Great dining as always. A must do in Silver Spring
We have dined at 8407 for several years, primarily for special occasions. We have always been very pleased with the menu, the food preparation and the service. We have many choices now in Silver Spring, some good, and some not so good. 8407 is at the top of our list.
I went here for a business lunch. It was on a Friday, we had a reservation and were promptly seated. I ordered a salad, and it was meh. It had romaine lettuce, maybe two cherry tomatoes that were sliced, a tablespoon of gorgonzola cheese and chicken (I substituted chicken instead of the steak). I had an espresso after lunch, and it was so bitter. No crema on top. Disappointing. I think if you keep it simple, you will be ok here for lunch. The restaurant looks nice and has exposed brick throughout. I liked the feel, just wish I liked the lunch better!
Nice quiet evening
Low volume day, and service was very prompt. Don't know if this is the case all the time. Food was great, and view overlooking Silver Spring was surprisingly pleasant.
Good, but could be better
Overall it was a good dining experience. The staff was great and most of the items we got were delicious. The Cesar salad left a lot to be desired - it was totally tasteless. While I appreciated the whole anchovies in the salad the dressing was terrible and watery. They also have a kids menu and crayons which was a nice surprise for us and our young child.

Fantastic - perfect blend of neighborhood bistro and sophisticated gourmet experience. Always something new and always in an unexpected direction. We can't get enough!

5 for business dinner. Food was superb. Despite low attendance in the dining room, service was slow.
Good but not great
I had the duck duo which was very tasty, but I could not find even a hint of the butternut squash puree mentioned on the menu as a component of the dish. My companion's gnocchi seemed a little bit bland, but the bread pudding for dessert was a big hit. The ambiance is nice even if the windows overlook the transit center. The service was very good. I wondered if we were being served by the chef, since the server kept referring to the food in the first person, i.e. "Tonight I have for you ..."
Better and better
Our meals this visit were the best we have experienced at 8407. We both had specials, a Thai bouilabaisse with a coconut broth and grilled salmon over a parsnip and celery heart puree with sliced, braised brussel sprouts between the salmon and puree. We finished the meal sharing the best key lime pie we've tasted. All in all a fabulous meal. Prices have gone up, it should be noted, since our last visit so they may affect the frequency of our visits but won't stop us from going.
So glad we came back
We are from the west coast. Two years ago, my husband had a meeting in Maryland and we tried Kitchen Bar. This year, the same group met and we knew that we wanted to try it again. Our experience proved that the restaurant didn't just have a good night two years ago. This year, we made it an all duck night, choosing the duck spring rolls for an appetizer and the duck breast and confit as an entree. Both were great. Desert and our wines by the glass were too. The service was impeccable. I hope that my husband has more meetings in the future so that we can return.
Silver Spring gem!
I love this place. Have been many times and will go again.
