8407 kitchen bar Ratings and Reviews

8407 is a valued resource in downtown Silver Spring despite the unimaginative name. The menu grew a great deal since we last visited, to 24-hours-a-day diner levels. The pricing increased too, unfortunately. Service was acceptable but not without several notable imperfections. What triggers this review is the shockingly unkempt state of the men's restroom. If we hadn't already eaten, we'd have left the building immediately fearing that 8407's approach to kitchen hygiene was equally sloppy.

Excellent food and service. This was a dinner meeting so the atmosphere was very appropriate. Quiet without a lot of overwhelming interruptions by the server.

The start of the evening was uncomfortable; there appears to be no close parking. Around the block, there is parking, and it turns out that there is a "secret" path almost directly to the 8407, which I used when I left. The Hostess was amiable and smiling. She told me about the path to parking. Once seated, the waitress appeared almost instantly, and she, too, was amiable and smiling. Water and bread were served quickly. After a few minutes to read the menu, the waitress re-appeared, and I placed my orders for dinner and my drink. The drink was served quickly, and it turned out to be one of the best I have had in a long time. I discussed it with the waitress, who also prepared the drink, and she expressed herself clearly and appreciatively. The food was trout prepared in a way I had not seen, which was excellent. The vegetables were fresh and well prepared; the fish was very slightly over-cooked, but tasty; the presentation was well done. I ordered dessert, bread pudding, which was a bit too sweet for my taste, but it wasa well prepared. The meal was well done and memorable.
This restaurant was a personal favorite of mine for a long time however on this occasion, i was left disappointed. I had raved about this place to friends as the quality of the food and the ambiance were just exquisite. On arriving, they let us know that upstairs was closed but that we could expect the exact same menu as upstairs. I opened the menu and was really confused. The menu has changed and had seemed to have expanded somewhat. My girlfriend's meal was barely edible and she had also liked this place on the numerous previous occasions we'd been there. Something definitely has changed - either the chef, ownership or both.
It was OKAY
We went for brunch. There was no kid's menu. They offered to bring a half a portion, but we still paid full price. The shrimp and grits was VERY greasy, like a big vat of grease was poured atop the grits, and the sausage wasn't very good either, but the shrimp was cooked well. I will say that the calamari was good and the mimosa was also good. I would probably go back for a drink, but would not eat there again.
Great tuck-away location. Plenty of parking in the local public garage. This is one block from Silver Spring metro. The menu is seasonal. The service is great/friendly and the price point is about average of most places in the region. For two no wine or bar drinks, the bill was under $50. This place can get busy after 5p for happy hour.

I do not remember the name of our server, but she was simply outstanding. She made suggestions, explained how items were prepared, but most of all she did not rush us. Her warm smile just made it a delight to be serviced by her.
Great space for a business lunch
Great food, quiet area upstairs to be able to talk and not scream at your client
Great as always
My wife and I always enjoy 8407 for special occasions and they recently expanded their menu. This time we took our son, his buddy and my visiting mom for a family dinner out. The hostess graciously moved us to a different table since we preferred a window, the waiter was friendly and attentive but not overbearing, the food was excellent, and the dinner conversation was easily heard without competition from other nearby diners. Thanks!

Must be new owners. This place is a shadow of what it once was. Used to be a small menu, but almost everything was good. Now it has part of the old menu pasted on to the new menu. The new menu is extensive, but almost everything our party of 10 ordered was substandard. We used to go there once a month. I do not plan ever to return.
Still nice, but not as before
Nice for the neighborhood; but somehow not a great as it used to be. The duck was mediocre, used to be a signature dish. And they were out of our first 2 choices of wine. Still nice vibe and good service, but needs a renewed focus
Best restaurant in Silver Spring!
We love, love, love 8407 Kitchen Bar. Whether it's happy hour at the bar downstairs with friends, or a date night upstairs in their dining room, it never fails to meet/exceed our expectations. The additions to the menu have been great over the past couple of months. We're sad that we're moving soon and won't have this place around the corner to go to anymore!

The service was extremely slow. We were never checked on and felt as though we had to ask for the condiments, for our drinks to be refreshed. Also we were in a group of 9 and one person did not receive their meal until everyone else had already finished eating. We informed the restaurant prior to our arrival 1 week in advance that we were celebrating 3 birthdays and they were never acknowledged. Just wasn't a good experience. I will say that the hostess was very friendly and accommodating and the restaurant's ambiance was very nice.

I enjoyed my time here catching up with a friend, but I'm not sold on visiting again. The food was delicious, the selection of wine/beer/liquor was solid and the staff friendly. I felt, however, that both the food and drink were very overpriced for the portions. Additionally, it rattled me that the bartenders constantly threw dishes as they were bussing the bar hastily into the bus bins. They didn't place them in there...they seriously dropped them creating very startling moments for the patrons around. I thought the first time was just an accident, but sadly, it was a common practice. Again, the food and booze were yummy and I didn't have a "bad" experience, just not one that would make me itch to return.

One of the best restaurants I have eaten at in Silver Spring, MD. Great food and ambiance! Wide selection of wines as well.

We had not been to the restaurant in many months. Our dinner was so enjoyable we will need to return more often. Our party of six was comfortably seated at a round table...great for conversation. Wine and drinks were very good. Dinner was outstanding. The wait staff and the manager, Katy Khodayar, were friendly and attentive. We look forward to coming back soon.
Usually a great experience.
I really like this restaurant. The experience is often great. However, on special occasions or holidays (i.e. Mother's Day or Valentine's Day), it might be helpful to check in with the restaurant before arriving or making a reservation to see if they're offering the pre-fix menu only.
Love this place
This was my second time coming here, first time for brunch. Took a chance with it being Mother's Day, and was not disappointed. $35 3-course meal was a great value, and good variety of options. Would love to come here for a normal brunch sometime. Service is fairly casual, but our server definitely hit the mark and was pleasant throughout our meal. Looking forward to dining here again soon!
Fair. Didn't seem to have their act together.
For a restaurant that's been in business for about 6 years they didn't seem to have their act together. The cocktail was fair. I ordered one of their specialty drinks and it didn't have a lot of flavor. Our main entrees and salads came out together which is a cardinal no-no so we told our waiter that the main course will get cold by the time we eat our salad so he took them back. When he brought them back they were lukewarm (clearly had just been put under a heat lamp). He took them back again and when they came back one order of lamb chops that was supposed to be medium rare was overcooked. The presentation of the dishes was nice but the flavor on each of the things we ordered - (oysters, lamb chops, steak diane, and cod) was fair. They were all a little bland. It was too bad because it seemed like it should have been very good. The waiter was very nice and they did take half off our entrees which was very nice.
Good service and great food!
We came to the restaurant for my dad's birthday and had a great time! One of our guests did not like their meal, so the restaurant gave her the option of selecting another dish. Everyone else's dishes were great and we really enjoyed our time!
Meet-Up with Friend
I had a lovely time at 8407 Kitchen Bar. I live in the Solaire and met up with my friend who grew up in Montgomery County there. She informed me it used to be a club and she participated in a modeling contest there about 20 years ago. How cool! The service and food were excellent. Next, I'll return with my husband!
Not good food anymore
This used to be a great place but the last two times I went, the food was horrible. I had meat that was indigestible. And both times Vrecently, the server never asked how the meal was.
Enjoyable Sunday brunch
Spur of the moment choice for brunch last Sunday. We had been to 8407 before for lunch and dinner and knew the food would be reliably good, the service efficient and friendly, and the atmosphere pleasant. I had the shrimp and grits, and except for a mix-up with my order that delayed its arrival, it was a great choice--delicious. DH had at the deviled eggs and a grilled cheese, bacon and tomato sandwich. He was happy with his sandwich and had room for key lime pie for dessert. To make up for the delay with my entre, they comped a cappuccino which was appreciated.
fun, lively place
Great service and nice feel - cool space with exposed ceiling. Food was ok, not great. Stay with staples like nachos, burgers and shy away from fancy stuff. Nice diverse menu.
Not what it used to be
I used to be a really big fan of 8407 and my husband and I came here for many special occasions. The new menu shows that they are clearly trying to "down scale" in order to attract new clients. The food seemed heavier (loaded with cheese) and saltier than previously and the menu was less for foodies and more for "mainstream" eaters. And a kids menu??? The restaurant just isn't what it used to be. The biggest disappointment was that even though it seems they are trying to downscale, it didn't seem as though the prices went down with the quality. If that were the case, then I would recommend it as a nice family choice. But, for future special occasions with my husband, I think we will be looking for different dining experience.
The steak Diane was fantastic and the ambiance was rustic and beautiful! One of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time!
Great Business Dinner Locale
This was my 4th or 5th business dinner/mtg held at the Kithen Bar!! It is my "go-to" choice in Southern Maryland.
Good Eats in Silver Spring
8407 is a good place for nice food and drink in downtown Silver Spring. On weekdays the downstairs bar is fine for a lively happy hour scene. If you're in the mood for a more quiet experience, perhaps talking with your date, the upstairs bar provides a welcome contrast. There is a good, imaginative drink list. The food is well prepared and presented. There is ample parking in the area and it is right across from the Metro stop.
Missing On Some Details
Given the appetizing menu and the cost of their entrees , 8407 is missing some of the little details needed to make for an outstanding dining experience. They could have offered a roll/butter plate (or olives or whatever) before the meal, the entree dinner plates were somewhat lacking in terms of presentation for the prices charged and the waiter didn't make an effort to entice us with appetizers or any dish for that matter. The food was tasty and the atmosphere nice, but not enough to keep foodies/gourmets coming back for more.

The restaurant has nice lighting and very spacious. I love fries cooked in duck fat! So crispy! My only gripe is the bathrooms are small and located downstairs. If you're seated at the top in the dining area, you have to walk down the stairs to use it. For a person with knee problems thus was perilous.
Haven't been here in a year, but it seems the food is not as good as I remember. We had the fried oyster appetizer (undercooked and mushy), Duck Duo (confit was dry) and ribeye steak (underseasoned and surprisingly tough). Even the mashed potatoes and vegetables were bland. Maybe they forgot salt? This was once my favorite restaurant. I guess some things have to change, but too bad it's not for the better.
Been patronizing 8407 Kitchen Bar for years. It started out really hot and trendy, and I think that they went into a slump a year or so ago. The good news is that the restaurant has emerged better than ever. While some faves have been retained (Duck two ways is to die for!), the new, expanded menu is "inspired", not "tired". They still emphasize locally sourced, in season foods, the wine selection is outstanding, service is very attentive and the bar downstairs was hoppin' after 9 pm.

My spouse and I visited Kitchen Bar for our recent date night and truly enjoyed the ambiance. The drinks were quite potent and inventive. The deviled eggs were well-seasoned. I had the short rib bolognese-hearty and flavorful. My spouse tried the grilled cheese with bacon and tomato-decided it needed more cheese for the amount of bread provided.
We can count on 8407 to deliver creative, well prepared meals. We are regulars here for that reason.
Great atmosphere but food overpriced and overrated
I've dined at 8407 a few times, and each time the food is always bland and unexciting. For the cost of the entrees, I would stick to the bar menu or burgers/sandwiches. Thinking I couldn't go wrong with a burger, it arrived soggy and not cooked to how I ordered it - I asked for medium rare, but the burger came so rare that I couldn't even taste it. However, the location is convenient (you can park in the metro parking lot for free after 7pm on weeknights), and the atmosphere is great for meeting with friends. Probably a better place for getting drinks or meeting friends for happy hour. They do have a great happy hour menu (everyday too!)
A big change in the kitchen
This was our 5th time to 8407--in the past, the very high-end menu meant we only came for special occasions. We were surprised to see the menu was now tripled in its offerings, with many lower priced items on the menu. You can still get an haute cuisine $30 entree--the duck and the scallop entrees are memorable!-- but I found the $11 mahi tacos were just what I needed. Great cocktails, great coffee. No room for desert. We'll come more frequently now.
Went here on a Friday night for dinner and the bar was really busy downstairs but upstairs was nice and quiet for a perfect dinner. Our waiter was fantastic and the food was delicious. Would go there again on a date or with friends.
Second Time's a Charm
Not impressed back in August. However, this time 8407 was like an entirely different restaurant: both the service and food were very good to excellent. I wasn't pleased with the section of the restaurant in which we were seated. It reminded me of a hospital cafeteria - cold and clinical. Otherwise a most enjoyable dining experience.
