L'Auberge Chez Francois Ratings and Reviews
Very good food in a nice setting
The menu offers a great variety of dishes. Everything is prepared with talent and care and the waiters do a good job of informing and serving. I have known this restaurant for many years and my only regret is the distance from my home in Potomac: I would visit it more often were it closer!
A wonderful, delicious, romantic dinner for 2
L'Auberge is the special place I go with my girlfriends for lunch. I got a gift certificate for my birthday and took my husband for dinner. The food was outstanding!! Many wonderful hors d'oeuvres and entrees to choose from on the prix fixe menu. The atmosphere was romantic. It was very busy on Saturday night but the service was still great. The wine recommended with dinner by the sommelier was also outstanding. $$$$ for dinner but worth it on a special occasion.
Service was much slower than we've been accustomed to at this restaurant. The server was quick to promote the prix fixe menu and had to be asked for the conventional a la carte one for four senior citizens who obviously were not equipped to accommodate the multi-course program being proposed. The experience would have been better had the conventional menu been provided initially along with a mention that the prix fixe arrangement was available.

The food was very good but nothing compared to our first visit. The service this time was just average. I think the waitress had too many tables and wasn't nearly as knowledgeable as our first waiter. We were in the upstairs formal dining area this time. Our previous and first experience was downstairs in the more casual area. The waiter downstairs was extremely knowledgeable and ordered our entire meal which was the best meal of my life. Not the case this experience. Also to my surprise the menus were different. Beware open table does not give you a choice on which area you want to dine. You will be booked for the formal area. I realized this too late (by a call not anywhere in open table) and this experience with friends didn't even compare to our first. Although it was very good (food) we talked it up to friends to be so much more.
Excellent meal, great value!
My wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and decided to have lunch instead of the usual dinner. She'd always wanted to go to Chez Francois and we determined to go this year. We chose from the prix fixe menu and the choices were varied and interesting. Both first and second courses were excellent, although my cassoulet was a bit too salty. We were also given extras: an amuse bouche of split pea soup, a salad between courses, an an extra plate of meringue with ice cream to recognize our anniversary. Only to be expected from a gourmet restaurant. Service was first class and wait staff were always on hand. Overall it was a great dining experience and reasonably priced at that. We'll definitely recommend this restaurant and what's more, we'll be back!
We've been dining at L'auberge for almost thirty years! It remains one of my favorite restaurants for special occasions. Sometimes predicitibility is a good thing especially when it comes to fine dining! The dover sole never fails to disappoint--my favorite. Always cooked to perfection just the way my French grandmother would have prepared it! It is such a pleasant experience to be transported back to quieter times while savoring the French country ambiance of L'auberge. The dining room is so meticulously clean that I can't help but wonder if a league of elves descend upon the restaurant and clean thoughout the night til the place sparkles! Mainly, when I think of dining out for a birthday or anniversary, I think L"Auberge! I can count on my favorite dishes, prepared with care and, of course a delicious hot souffle to end a wonderful evening. Don't forget to take home a slice of Plum Tart!

We had a wonderful lunch made so by the warm atmosphere, excellent service and great food. Conversation was able to just flow with only the required interruptions
We love L'Auberge Chez Francois for lunch on our anniversary. It's classic French, with tables discretely apart, low noise level, excellent traditional French food with an Alsatian bent. The drive out there can be tricky especially on a foggy night which is why we prefer a two hour lunch there with a bottle of wine, followed by a short drive to Great Falls Park with its easy walk/hike. At the end of that you've sobered up enough to drive home safely. The prices are excellent for a gourmet lunch. And the setting is lovely. Can't miss!
Classic, elegant dining in an old-world setting
On our first visit to the famous Chez Francois, we were greeted and treated like frequent diners. Wonderful wine list featuring a wide range of Alsacian (and other) selections, we took the advice from a knowledgeable and friendly sommelier. Bring your appetite, and be prepared to relax at a wonderful 4 course meal. The bread basket and the Baked Alaska were among the highlights of our amazing meal.
Happy 40th Anniversary!
AMAZING staff. They treat you like the night was specifically for you. PERFECT ambiance. The chef totally outdid himself. THANK YOU to everyone there. Will cherish being the ones to close down the restaurant I grew up next door to the last 40 years that night.
Found this place on Open Table!
Perfect place for our 14 year anniversary. Was not aware this place existed . Will come back for special occasions.
Our plans changed during the day. Instead of arriving on time for our 5:30 reservations, we arrived 1.5 hours early. We sat on the patio under the trees enjoying the light breeze, the sun, the good service and wonderful wine. We were offered a slightly early seating which we accepted, again enjoying great food, delicious wine and the atmosphere of the Alsace region of France. The afternoon and evening could not have been better.
I have loved this place for 30 years
This is such a special place, with wonderful food, skillful and attentive service, and a lovely ambiance. It's not inexpensive, but every meal is memorable. L'Auberge is a monument to traditional fine dining that can never be replaced by whatever the restaurant du jour happens to be.
Perfect Birthday Dinner
We went for a very special birthday. The food was perfect, the atmosphere was perfect and I can't think of anything that could have been done better. It had been many years since I had been to L'Auberge Chez Francois and it was just as good as I remembered.
A Garden Party
Having been to the restaurant but never having eating outdoors, I thought this would be the opportunity. Upon arrival it was chilly, but as the afternoon progressed the temperature warmed up and the day was delightful. Snails and cassoulet!! What more can I say!! And my dining partner enjoyed her food as well. Impeccable service and a delicious right-bank Bordeaux both paired beautifully with the cuisine. What a great experience...again. And the souffles!!! If you haven't had one, get there soon and enjoy. L'Auberge is one of the great dining spots in Northern Virginia, and while it is a drive for us, we will be coming back.
Just perfect French cuisine.
Fine dining in a quaint restaurant in Great Falls, VA. Nothing but the finest ingredients and exquisite preparation.
Pleasant setting, well presented pedestrian food
Choosing a seafood dish from an Alsatian restaurant was unwise, as the food while nicely prepared was not distinctive. For eaters with reasonable appetites I suggest the Bistro rather than the full more costly meal. Service was fine and attentive.
Excellent. entertaining too when bat flew in room
erfect for our 30th anniversary . We will remember it forever. P
Two friends from Europe were my guests for a special evening. They were delighted with the lovely outdoor area of the restaurant and were immensely impressed with the food and wine. The evening was a great success - with a service that was extraordinary. In short, an outstanding dining experience!
Magical Anniversary Lunch
The ambience was truly magical, the food and service was perfect! Outdoor dining on a beautiful and quiet Spring weekday could not have been better.

Every aspect was superb during our Sunday dinner experience. We believe that Six Stars are more appropriate for all the rankings.
Our daughter could choose to go to a French restaurant as part of a class project. We found this restaurant online (we live 1 hr west of DC). It happened to be her birthday as well, so we rolled it into one. Both of our children (17 and 14) thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were excited to try the variety of foods offered. It's been almost a week and they are still talking about it! We WILL be back!
Birthday lunch in the garden
Celebrated my wife's and my 10 y.o. daughter's birthdays for Sunday lunch on the patio. The weather was amazing, the red tulips were blooming and the food was great. I had not been to the restaurant in years and we forgot how amazing it is. The service was great, a balance not being obtrusive and being efficient. My daughter only wanted Escargot and a Caesar salad, but the rest of us ordered from the Prix Fixe menu. Our choices ranged from Sole, duck and calf's liver. All excellent. Then deserts came. A soufflé, plum tart, 3 chocolate cake. The restaurant sent two meringue swans over raspberry coulis for the birthday girls. Then they sent champagne and sparkling apple juice for my daughter. Only to be followed by chocolate truffles. While the meal was long, my daughter amused herself by sitting by the fountain, walking around the gardens or reading on one of the benches or rocking chair. What a great way to celebrate a special occasion!
Been to most, if not all, of the top restaurants in DC and none of them can come close to offering the overall dining experience you get at L'Auberge Chez Francois.
Extremely romantic and always delicious

A wonderful anniversary dinner
for our anniversary, we wanted to find a new special place beyond our usual favorites. Two of our previous favorites had closed over the years and we wanted to be adventurous. A friend of ours recommended Chez Francois. We LOVED it! Wonderful ambiance, service and food. A very romantic setting and we will definately be returning!

Wonderful, as always. Enjoyed the prix fixe lunch menu that includes a small glass of wine.
My latest meal at L'Auberge was an exceptional as always. The service is impeccable, the food is fantastic, and the overall experience was perfect for the occasion.
We celebrated our anniversary here and it was all posh and swell and delish. The Dover sole was so special. The service was attentive, but not invasive. Somehow we ended up with three desserts. All was good in our world. Thank you for a lovely anniversary dinner.
My husband and I went for our 14 year anniversary and the dinner was everything we could hope for. The server (Mark) was outstanding, the food was amazing and they did everything to make us feel like we were the only couple there. The wine list was top notch, also. All in all it was a lovely experience and I would happily recommend them.
WONDERFUL AS ALWAYS
This was my first return visit since moving away from Great Falls in 2008 and it was a must do on my list. Was also my mother's birthday and Chez Francois is one of her favorite restaurants. We were lucky to have Sammy attend to us and he was absolutely wonderful. Our lunch was the experience we were expecting - no easy feat. I was a tad disappointed that frog legs is no longer on the menu as noone does them better! Many wonderful memories were evoked by this last visit and I'm sure there will be more to come.
Good food, but very pricey
Service is outstanding, food is good, but very expensive. This is fit for a special occasion, not an everyday place.
A Delightful Evening At L'Auberge
Pleasant setting, great food and plentiful, excellent friendly service and good seating separation from other patrons. Where ever you want to be ensure a great meal, go to L'Auberge Chez Francois.
Such a special treat!
This restaurant makes you feel truly pampered in France! It rivals bistros in France! The food, elegance, ambiance is perfect for a special occasion & won't be rushed!
Restaurant is elegantly appointed. The service is outstanding. The food is of very good quality, but a bit too heavy for my taste.. The four course tasting menu is laden with unneeded calories. Too much beans.... The cost is rather high.
We certainly enjoyed the food, wine, ambiance and excellent service. We will go back with pleasure.
Nice but Pricey
This is a long-standing restaurant with consistently good reviews, but I just think it is overpriced. Some think that the more you pay the better the experience, but I have eaten well prepared food with excellent service around the world that isn't as expensive as this restaurant. L'Auberge Chez Francois is a fully expert restaurant, but I wouldn't return unless there was a specific reason to dine there. Plus, getting there is off the beaten track, and I live in Arlington, close by.
Had dinner here with two friends. I was impressed with the ambiance even before walking into the restaurant. Plenty of parking spaces. Food was fantastic and service was fabulous. They kept bringing more and more food, all wonderfully presented and delicious. I will definitely come back again to celebrate special occasions with family and friends.
Always a favorite!
We frequent L'auberge chez francois and even Jacques. The food is consistently great, wonderfully presented and a great place all year long. This time I forgot to ask for my favorite waiter, and the waiter we had was not as good, overcharged us on the bill, we had to correct it and ask for things a few times...this is unusual...we have always had great service. We'll go back of course...but will get in a different servers section.
